The early 19th-century eastward expansion of the New Town was a hugely ambitious and expensive project driven by a sense of national pride after the defeat of Napoleon. The scale of the achievement is visible on reaching the open section of Waterloo Place, where the drop to the Old Town is seen through triumphant arches – though the bridge took seven years to build and almost bankrupted Edinburgh. George IV made a grand entrance into the city from Calton Hill on his State visit in 1822, and Regent Terrace and Royal Terrace were named after him.
